CUDAHY, Wis. -- A well-respected optometrist from Cudahy has been arrested, accused of killing a prostitute.
According to a criminal complaint from Hennepin County, Minn., Minneapolis police were called to the University Radisson Hotel on Aug. 6 and found a 24-year-old prostitute, Alison Daniels, dead on the eighth floor. She had been shot in the head, the Hennepin County Medial Examiner's Office said.
The criminal complaint said there were signs of "an obvious struggle" and that hair, consistent with Daniels', was around the room.
Court records show that on July 24, two weeks prior before Daniels was killed, Daniels and another woman were in Las Vegas with Dean Barrette. The other woman said that she saw Barrette give Daniels a large envelope of money in exchange for the arrangement of a sham marriage. It's unclear why Barrette and the victim were planning the marriage. The other woman and Daniels left Las Vegas without Daniels making good on the wedding.
Barrette tracked Daniels to the University Radisson Hotel in Minneapolis and confronted her, investigators said.
Just before the killing, police said Daniels called a male friend and said that she was with the man from "that situation in Vegas" and that he had a gun to her head. Daniels told the friend that she needed $4,000 wired to her.
Telephone records indicated that a cell phone belonging to Barrette was used near the University Radisson Hotel approximately one hour before the shooting.
A Milwaukee police arrested Barrette at the La Quinta hotel in Glendale on Aug. 8. Court records show police found a bloody shoe in his room.
Barrette's mother, Eleanor said her son is a happy-go-lucky guy, not a killer. "I don't know the story. I knew nothing about this," she said.
Eleanor Barrette said her son is a well-respected optometrist in Cudahy and she wants to know how it could have happened.
"He had a bad leg, he was taking medication, his leg was bothering him, so I don't know if that had something to do with it," she said.
Barrette has been charged with first-degree murder and was in the Milwaukee County Jail Monday night, fighting extradition.
